ADULT SUPPORT AND PROTECTION

(Often referred to as ASP)

Anyone over the age of 16 who has a mental illness, learning disability, an older person with physical or severe mental illness and is a risk of harm from themselves or others.

Legislation used for people aged 16 or over who are unable to safeguard their own property; rights; welfare and other interests and are more vulnerable to harm.

If you, a friend, a relative or professional has reported a concern and are worried you are at risk of harm.

AN INDEPENDENT ADVOCACY WORKER WILL

  • Listen to you and believe what you say,
  • Help you say what you want or don’t want,
  • Help prepare and support you to meetings and case conferences,
  • Help you access the information about decisions you may need to make.

AN INDEPENDENT ADVOCACY WORKER WON’T

  • Judge what you say, think or feel,
  • Give you advice or tell you what to do or say.
